The Creation Keepers

| May 23, 2019

TC Christian’s 7th grade science class were recently on Fuel-FM to discuss how they planned to honor God by being faithful CREATION KEEPERS and care for His Creation in a very specific way.

It all started when, as a wrap up to their ecosystem unit, they began to explore the local ecosystem more closely.  They learned what a delicate balance it is and how a change in one level can affect the entire ecosystem. They discovered that an issue affecting our local ecosystem is the pollinator crisis, and they decided to do something about it.  After completing some research, students found several things that could make a difference and they went to work.  One group began to build a bee house and a bee bath, one group learned about bee-friendly plants and planted a pollinator garden, and a third group got to work finding ways they could educate others.  They made posters, taught students through our very own SABRE NEWS, all of which resulted in their appearance on Fuel FM.  Some pictures of their activities are here.

Some of the highlights of their discoveries and what we can do to help include:
  • Honey bees are our #1 pollinators and they are NOT harmful bees!  Unlike wasps or yellow jackets, they do NOT want to sting you and will not do so unless threatened.  So, don’t be afraid or swat at them.
  • Dandilions are the #1 early food source for bees.  So, please don’t mow them down in your yards until other flowers begin blooming.
  • Some flowering plants have been modified so they are NOT bee-friendly!  Many inexpensive plants that are sold at stores are modified so they do NOT contain the nectar that bees are looking for.  Bees are attracted to the color and expend the energy to fly there, but do not receive any food from them. Check the tags to see if they are pollinator friendly.
  • Chemicals play a big role in the pollinator crisis.  Consider avoiding the use of chemicals on your lawn if possible.  There are many natural alternatives. Or, if it is not possible, then spray AT NIGHT when bees are dormant.  This minimizes the detrimental impact on them.
  • Bee houses and bee baths are fun activities to do with your kids.  You can find “how-to” videos on YouTube.
The entire interview can be heard here.  Many thanks to Fuel-FM and our host, Jason Bouwmeester.
